Peter Gibbons talks about his journey in tax
I joined Grant Thornton in 2019 having studied Ag Science in college. While I had always known that I wanted to study Ag Science, I had never contemplated a career in finance.
I heard about the Professional Work Experience programme in Grant Thornton and after researching it I realised it would be an interesting option for me. Grant Thornton was an attractive workplace due to its size and reputation.
The firm struck me as an innovative, forward-thinking firm and didn’t just stick to the status quo. I want to be on the cutting-edge and always look for progression and innovation, and Grant Thornton’s philosophy aligns well with my own in this respect. As well as this, Grant Thornton is one of the fastest growing firms in Ireland, and this growth was something I wanted to be involved with.
Peter's tax journey in Grant Thornton
When I joined the tax department in 2019, I worked in the corporate tax compliance team while also helping out the personal tax compliance team at busy times of the year. My role has evolved since then with a move into Transfer Pricing and corporate structuring during 2020.
I now work in the tax incentives team specialising in capital allowances. I am the main point of contact in the firm for capital allowances and this gives me great exposure while still in my training contract with Grant Thornton.
As part of the firm’s commitment to social activities and networking, we were recently sent to London to partake in a 5-aside soccer tournament with other Grant Thornton firms across the UK and Ireland.
I have recently completed the Part 3 Irish Tax exams which means I am a fully qualified Chartered Tax Advisor. I can honestly say that this would not have been possible without the support I received from the Exam Support team in Grant Thornton.
I have had a great experience so far with my career at Grant Thornton and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
Peter is now a manager in our Corporate & Transactions department.
